Nobody Gets 180 Days Anymore: The Honest 2026 Guide to Actually Moving to Mexico
Three years ago this month a woman at the immigration desk in Guadalajara wrote 60 in my passport and slid it back without looking up.
Sixty. I had read every post in every group for a year and every one of them said you get 180 days, stop worrying. I had given notice on my flat, sold the car and told everyone at home I was off to Mexico for six months to see. I stood at the luggage carousel doing sums.
That number was the first thing the internet got wrong for me. It was not the last. The rules for living in Mexico changed more between July 2025 and February 2026 than in the ten years before, and most of what is pinned in the groups is a screenshot of the old world. Who wrote it
