And she wasn't being difficult, she was applying the rules exactly as written, and nobody had told me what the wording had to say.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe couple after me in the queue got theirs approved in nine minutes.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eThis is the bit nobody puts on the Facebook groups\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eMoving to Spain is not hard. Moving to Spain is a paperwork exam with a very specific answer sheet, and the pass rate depends almost entirely on whether somebody showed you the answer sheet first.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHere is where most people go wrong before they even start.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThey assume they can live here on visits. You cannot. Ninety days in any hundred and eighty covers holidays, viewings and research trips, and it is not and has never been a way to live in Spain. People stack trips, get a stamp they didn't expect, and find out the expensive way.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThey assume they can work remotely on the non-lucrative visa. You cannot, and this is the one that's caught up hardest recently. Consulates now read remote work performed from Spanish soil as incompatible with the NLV even when the employer is British, and London is asking for a termination letter or a retirement certificate to prove it. If you're working remotely, you are on the wrong form, and finding that out at the appointment is a very bad day.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThey assume an NIE means residency. It doesn't, it's a number. They assume the padron legalises the stay. It doesn't, it's a registration with the town hall. Three different things, three different purposes, and confusing them is the most common thing I see.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eThe numbers, since everyone asks\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor 2026 the non-lucrative route wants 2,400 euros a month, so 28,800 euros a year for a single applicant, plus more for each person coming with you. The UK visa fee is 516 pounds per applicant on the reciprocity rate. Private health insurance has to be full cover with no copayments.
