Never Actually Sold Out: Machu Picchu Without an Agency, 2026 planning kit cover

Never Actually Sold Out: Machu Picchu Without an Agency (2026 Planning Kit)

£12.99

For months, Machu Picchu "sold out" weeks ahead. A lot of those tickets were never really gone.

In September 2026 Peru's Ministry of Culture audited eight tour companies and found that almost two in three of the 209,051 reservations they had made were later cancelled. The old system let anyone hold a ticket for three hours without paying, so slots sat blocked while independent travellers were told there was nothing left, and plenty of them paid an agency a big markup for a ticket they could have bought themselves.

That system is gone. Tickets are now sold straight to you on the official Tu Boleto site, in your own name, and you have 15 minutes to pay. Tens of thousands of entries opened back up for the end of the year.

The catch? The new rules are stricter, and they punish small mistakes. One wrong letter in a name, the wrong circuit, a train that gets you to the gate 40 minutes late, and you are standing outside one of the wonders of the world with a ticket that will not scan and no refund.

This kit walks you through the whole thing so you can book it yourself, with confidence, and spend the money you save on the trip instead.

What's inside

  • The 2026 rules in plain English. Named tickets, entry windows and late tolerance, the 2 hour 30 visit limit, no re-entry, the bag size limit, what gets you turned away at the gate.
  • The circuit picker. All ten routes explained by what you actually see, who each one suits, which ones are shut in low season, and which mountain add-ons sell out first.
  • The 15-minute checklist. A step-by-step walk through buying on Tu Boleto yourself, so the timer never catches you out.
  • Plan B in Aguas Calientes. How the 1,000 in-person tickets a day work, when to queue, what to bring, and what to do if they go.
  • Getting there without a tour. Cusco to Ollantaytambo, choosing your train, the bus up versus walking the steps, and where to sleep the night before.
  • Altitude-first itineraries. Ready-made 4, 5 and 7 day plans that start low in the Sacred Valley so you are not gasping on your big day.
  • The rainy season plan. November to April done properly: which entry times, what to pack, and how to keep a back-up day.
  • The package deal checker. The questions to ask any agency or bargain bundle before you hand over a penny.
  • A budget sheet and a printable day-of checklist for the morning you go up.

Who this is for

First-timers who want to see Machu Picchu properly without paying someone else to click "buy". Couples and families sorting tickets for several people at once. Anyone looking at a cheap package and wondering what is really in it. And anyone already in Cusco who has just found out the date they wanted looks "sold out".

Should you still use an agency?

Sometimes, yes. The Inca Trail can only be done with a licensed operator, and some people simply want everything handled. The kit does not tell you never to use one. It tells you exactly what a good package should include, so if you do book a tour you know whether you are getting a fair deal or paying double for a ticket in someone else's name.
