Jersey By Heart: Local Secrets, Tide Rules & Honest Stories from the Island That Isn't in the UK
They tell you two things when you land in Jersey. That it isn't in the UK, and where the potatoes come from.
Both true. Neither is the thing that matters.
The thing that matters is twelve metres of tide. This island changes size twice a day, and almost everything worth doing on it is decided by which way the water is going. Get that right and a week here is the best week of your year. Get it wrong and you spend it in a car park looking at where the beach used to be.
I came over from Reading in 2020, licensed for a job, with a suitcase and a two year plan. The job went in year two and the licence went with it. I stayed anyway. Six years later I'm still here, next door to a 79 year old from Grouville called Reg who has spent all six of them correcting me and has not run out of material.
This is everything he taught me, and everything I got wrong before he got hold of me, written down properly.
WHO IT'S FOR
If you were born here, it's your island seen by somebody who got every single thing wrong first, and it will start an argument about crab sandwiches.
If you left, it's the smell of vraic on a wet morning, the market on a Saturday, and the bit of home nobody writes down.
