Ten Steps From the Parking Lot: The Real Costa Rica Guide (Routes, Regions, Food, Money & the Traps to Skip)
The "hidden waterfall" had a parking lot. The "eco lodge" had one tree out front. And the guy who hired me skipped town before payday.
That was my first week in Costa Rica, twelve years ago. I'd flown down for a marketing job at a surf camp with a suitcase full of dress shirts, and by Friday I had $27, half a bag of plantain chips and no job.
An old farmer named Luis found me asleep on the beach in Jacó and put me to work pulling yuca. I stayed on his finca for almost two years. Later I bought a beat up Suzuki Jimny and drove it into pretty much every corner of the country until it started making noises I didn't like.
This guide is everything I figured out the slow, sweaty, expensive way, written down so you can figure it out in one evening on the couch.
Why I finally wrote it
Last year I met a mom who'd saved for years to bring her kids to see the rainforest. Her "authentic lodge" turned out to be a concrete block next to a building site, with drills going all day. Her little girl was holding a stuffed sloth and asked her, real quiet, "Is this really it?"
That trip didn't have to happen. Most bad Costa Rica trips don't. They come down to a handful of choices made before you ever land: the wrong region for the month you're going, a car you didn't need (or not having one when you did), a hotel that looked great in photos, and a day planned around the one place everyone else is going too.

Adventures and activities, plus extras at the back

Who it's for
First timers who want to get it right, families who can't afford to waste days, and anyone who's been once, came home feeling like they missed the good part, and wants to go back and do it properly.
Who it's not for
If you want a glossy coffee table book of the same ten photos everyone posts, this isn't it. It's the stuff I'd tell a friend over a beer before they booked anything.

It's a PDF, so it lands in your inbox the minute you buy and reads fine on a phone. Keep it on you for the whole trip, no signal needed.
Luis used to say "Así es la vida" whenever something went sideways. Some of that you can't avoid. Most of it you can.
