The Number on the Fridge: The Honest 2026 Guide to Living in Costa Rica on a Dollar Income

In June 2022 a dollar bought almost 700 colones. In September 2026 it bought 446, the lowest on record.
If you moved here on the first number, or you're planning a move off blog posts written back then, your budget is wrong. Nobody cut your pension. The feria didn't raise its prices. Your money just got smaller every month, quietly, and the rate on the news told you almost nothing about the rate the bank actually gives you.
This is the guide my wife Carol and I wish someone had handed us at Juan Santamaría. Not a brochure. The real 2026 version: the money, the paperwork, the waiting, and where to live when the rain doesn't come.
What you'll know by the end of the first evening
- Your break-even rate. The colón number below which your current budget stops working, so the next record low on the news stops being a guessing game.
- Which of your bills the rate actually hits. Every line marked colón or dollar, so you know where cutting back helps and where it won't make a difference.
- Where you stand with Migración. Whether your file is complete, which document runs out first, and the one check that stops a missed notice from costing you your category.

Who it's for
- You're already here on Social Security, a pension or remote pay, and every month feels a little tighter than the last.
- You're planning the move and you want this year's rules, not 2019's.
- You're stuck somewhere in the residency queue and nobody can tell you how long.
What's inside
- The Number on the Fridge. Why budgets built in 2022 break, and how to sort every bill into colón priced and dollar priced so you can see exactly where the squeeze is.
- Compra, Venta and the Rate You Actually Get. Where to change money, why the headline rate isn't yours, and how to convert in pieces so one bad week can't wreck a month.
- Residency in 2026, Plainly. Pensionado, rentista, inversionista and the digital nomad stay (which is not residency). What the end of Law 9996 on July 14, 2026 changed for new applicants.
- The File Is the Clock. The three month rule only starts when your file is complete. The ten working day trap, apostilles, and documents that expire before you file.
- Waiting It Out. The backlog, what your filing receipt does and doesn't cover, the notice you must never ignore, and the 90 days you get to collect your DIMEX after approval.
- The Caja. Why it's mandatory, how the payment is worked out, and how people combine it with private cover.
- Driving on Your Stamp. Your foreign license is good for the days on your entry stamp, not a day more, and what changes once you're a resident.
- The Perpetual Tourist Question. What "up to 180 days" really means at the border, and what's a rumor versus what's actually law.
- Where to Live If Water Matters. Central Valley, Guanacaste, the southern Pacific, the Caribbean, Arenal. Honest notes on water, El Niño, traffic and hospitals.
- Don Beto's Costa Rica. Living here as a neighbor, not a visitor. The feria, aguinaldo season, and the small things that make people treat you like you belong.

What it is not
It is not legal or financial advice and it won't file anything for you. It tells you what to ask and what to have ready, so the hours you pay a licensed abogado for actually count.
A note on the name: Joel Wander is a pen name. Every rule and number in the guide is dated and checked against Costa Rica's own published sources, so you can always see how current it is.
