There was a couple at the bus stop in Praiano on the fourth of August, and they had done everything right.
Booked eleven months out. Hire car from Naples. A folder of printed confirmations, which I could see because she was holding it against her chest the way you hold something that has stopped working. Their number plate ended in a seven and it was an odd-numbered day, so the coast road belonged to somebody else until six in the evening. They had read that hotel guests were exempt, and they are, for the day you arrive and the day you leave. Not for the Tuesday in the middle when you fancy driving to Ravello.
So they went for the bus, which is the right answer, at the wrong time. The nine o'clock came past full and did not stop. The one at twenty to ten did the same.
It was their thirtieth anniversary. They had saved for it.
My landlady Nunzia was on the wall by the church with her bag of tomatoes, watching all of it and saying nothing, which is her way of having a very strong opinion. Then she said it, in the voice she uses for weather: they come in August and they are surprised there is an August.
She is not being unkind. She has watched this coast fill up every summer since 1961 and she has stopped expecting anybody to be told the truth before they arrive. Because nothing here is actually hidden. The bus is full because the bus is always full at nine. The road is shut to half the cars because it has been, on and off, for years. None of it surprises a single person who lives here.
The only reason it ruins people's holidays is that nobody sits down and tells them in the order it is going to happen to them.

The question the groups ask every single day
Positano or Sorrento or Amalfi. It gets asked forty times a week and it gets answered with whichever town the person replying happened to enjoy, which is not the same as an answer.
The right base depends on five things, and nobody scores them together: what you can spend, how many steps your knees will forgive, how easily you can get out again, whether you want a town that is still awake at ten, and how forgiving it is if this is your first time. So I scored every one of them. Vietri to Sorrento, side by side, honestly, including the two that are better value than anywhere else on the coast and the one that is quietly the easiest place to base yourself if walking is difficult.
The coast does not have busy places. It has busy hours.

Half six is yours. Eleven belongs to the coaches. Six in the evening, the day trippers go and the coast hands itself back for about three hours.
